PrePASS for Reading Readiness

Online and manual assessments and exercises that supplement existing instruction to prepare students for 1st grade reading success—more students are ready to read at grade level, fewer require RTI Tiers 2 and 3

Assessment: PrePASS Online Checklist

The PrePASS Checklist is consistent with other checklists commonly used by teachers in pre-K and kindergarten to assess the Common Core Standards. It also targets basic skills that facilitate the student’s participation in the PASS Program.  Results of the PrePASS Assessment are entered into the student account in the PASS Administration system and are available to track student progress.

Learning Path:  PrePASS Reading Readiness Tutorials for Kindergarten

  • 26 letter/sound tutorial teaches the 26 letters, small case and capital, alphabetic pronunciation and the sound most commonly used in a word, concepts that also facilitate PASS training
  • Basic phonemic awareness concepts tutorial teaches that words are made up of individual sounds and what it means to drop, select, and blend those sounds, concepts that facilitate PASS training
  • Positional relationships tutorial helps students distinguish left from right and understand other positional concepts such as above, under, below, over, etc., as well as the ordinal concepts 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and first, middle, last, concepts that also facilitate PASS training
  • Basic sight-word vocabulary tutorial teaches students to recognize the 100 most common sight words and a few others that facilitate PASS training

PASS Check
 Entering 1st Grade

Assessment of the phonemic awareness skill set, which multiple research studies have found to be the most significant underlying cause of reading struggles—more students read at grade level or above, far fewer require RTI Tiers 2 and 3

Assessment:  PASS Check

Upon entering 1st grade, students take the PASS Check assessment, a subset of The Gibson Test, a normed cognitive skills assessment tool that is validated, easy-to-administer, and affordable. PASS Check addresses the phonemic awareness skill set, including sound analysis (two levels) and word attack, and takes just 10-15 minutes to complete. Results are reported instantly and are accessible remotely in the PASS Administration system student account.

Learning Path:  PASS Program

PASS combines intensive online training with focused mentoring to significantly improve reading scores. PASS supports existing curriculum and instruction methods and does not disrupt class schedules. Independent research has shown that over 80% of high-need students who receive PASS training are able to read at or above grade level before completion of the school year.

The Gibson Test for 2nd Grade and Up

An easy-to-administer cognitive skills assessment that supports RTI—more students read above grade level, few if any require RTI Tiers 2 and .

Assessment:  The Gibson Test

Students in 2nd grade and above take the 35-40 minute Gibson Test, a normed cognitive skills assessment tool that is validated, easy-to-administer, and affordable. The Gibson Test includes the three sub-tests from PASS Check, plus assessment of four other cognitive skills that support reading fluency and comprehension: processing speed, memory, visual processing, and logic and reasoning. Results are reported instantly and are accessible remotely in the PASS Administration system student account. The Gibson Test Report and PASS Learning Profile are highly useful in the RTI program—quickly and reliably identifying the precise skills to be trained for reading achievement at or above grade level within the school year.

Learning Path:  PASS+ Program

Students receive PASS+ training to strengthen the range of cognitive skills that support reading fluency and comprehension. State standardized testing has validated that 95% of high-need students who receive PASS+ training are able to demonstrate reading achievement at or above grade level within the school year.
